Decorating with Fleur-de-lis

The fleur-de-lis translates into the “flower of the lily” in French.  It is used as a symbol of light and life in some cultures, though it can also take on a religious subtext in crests and on flags depending on who is using it.  It is a symbol of France, but it is also used in other countries including Italy and the United States.  For a decorative symbol to incorporate into your home decor, consider using this stylized lily flower accent to bring a new aspect to any design style!

Art and Accessories:  An easy way to use the fleur-de-lis in your home design is with art and accessories.  For example, a fleur-de-lis framed prints, a lamp or lighting fixture that features the shape either as a print on the lampshade or as the lamp’s base, bookends, garden planters, throw pillows and others can be great ways to incorporate the shape into your room design.

Coordinating Designs:  Instead of just accenting your space with a fleur-de-lis, you can incorporate this design into a larger room theme.  For example, the city of New Orleans often uses the fleur-de-lis as its symbol.  In fact, their NFL team, the Saints, takes the symbol as its logo. Use the fleur-de-lis along with French-inspired ironwork, vintage furniture pieces and tropical Big Easy-inspired colors to complete a New Orleans look.  The city of Florence, Italy also uses the symbol in its decor, so you may also consider complementing the fleur-de-lis with warm, Mediterranean colors and rustic furniture.
